Summers were once filled with swimming pools, popsicles, and endless days. Now, in our fast-paced, modern dystopia, summer seems to disappear in a flash. For most Arizona public school students, the new school year begins next week, and those on year-round schedules have already returned.
There never seems to be enough time to fit in everything: sports camp, wilderness camp, Girl Scout camp, summer school, visits with friends and family, and, importantly, time for rest and self-care. Breaks matter. They give students and families a chance to step away from the demands of school and focus on other meaningful experiences.
Meanwhile, the burden of back-to-school shopping is weighing heavily on family and community budgets. With rising prices, new tariffs, and ever-constant tax breaks, some families are reusing last year’s backpacks and pencil cases just to get by.
Given some court rulings and Congressional acts, the education political landscape is changing how public education is funded, who has the right to attend school, and how students are protected at school. We understand that more and different threats are trained on school districts this year: trans inclusion (respecting names and pronouns, sports, bathroom access), queer student resources (counselors, social workers, community resources), and how/if students are protected from harassment and discrimination.
Education Action Alliance is confident that when historically targeted students are at the center of policy-making, inclusive policy will emerge. Student-centered policy and incorporating accommodations so every student’s unique needs are accounted for and acknowledged.
We’re committed to advocating for every student to have an inclusive educational experience so they can thrive at school.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
The Arizona Legislature sine die (adjourned their session) on June 27, 2025 until January 12, 2026. We look forward to this next phase of reflecting and strategizing for what’s to come in the next session. If you would like to participate in our Policy & Advocacy work, please let us know!
SCHOOL BOARD ACTION
We’re currently taking applications for Hall Monitors to help monitor local public school governing boards. We can train you or your organization on how meaningful this work is to stemming the attacks on some of our most vulnerable students: trans and nonbinary students.
School board meetings are usually held 1-2 times a month and Hall Monitors are able to listen and watch meetings in person or on the school district’s live stream from the comfort of your own home. Hall Monitors are key advocates to understanding local actions and the impacts on students and their families. Hall Monitors will also utilize community supporters to leverage community responses to school board actions.
Monitor Arizona’s school boards by applying to be a Hall Monitor!
